요즘 10대들이 연예인을 보며 열광하듯이 내가 10대였을 때 가슴 두근대며 좋아했던 연예인을 말하라면? 몇 명정도 말할 수 있을테지만 최고는 단연 Olivia Newton-John 이다. 1981년 대히트곡인 "Physical"이 발표된 이후 국내의 각종 전자박람회에서도 그 뮤직비디오를 볼 수 있었기 때문에 그녀의 존재는 벌써 알고 있었으나...

정작 팬이 되버렸던 건 한참 이후 친구가 녹음해준 테잎에서 "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"^[각주:1] 를 들은 이후부터이다. 파란 눈동자의 화려한 미모로 유명했음에도 아이러니하게 외모보다는 "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"를 부르는 그 목소리에 반해버렸다고나 할까. 그때는 이 노래가 뮤지컬 Evita의 삽입곡이라는 것도 몰랐지만 이 노래의 극적인 전개는 - 속삭이듯 조용히 시작해서 웅장하게 오케스트라와 같이하는 Olivia의 간절한 호소 - 다른 노래와는 뭔가 다르다고 생각했다. 특히 마지막 시퀀스에서 나지막하게 읇조리는 Olivia의 목소리에 10대의 나는, 그저 두근거리고 있을 뿐이었다.

"Don't Cry For Me Argentina"는 Olivia의 1977년 10번째 앨범인 "Making A Good Thing Better"에 실린 리메이크 곡이다. 원작곡자는 전설적인 뮤지컬 음악가 Andrew Lloyd Webber (Olivia와 1948년생 동갑) 이다.^[각주:2] 이 노래를 레코딩한 가수는 30명이 넘는다. 첫 레코딩으로 1977년 영국 차트 1위를 기록했던 Julie Covington (1977), 뮤지컬 "Evita"의 첫 주연이었던 Elane Paige (1978), 그리고 Carpenters (1977), The Dooleys (1980), Donna Summer (1981), Barbara Dickson (1985), Sinead O'Connor (1992), Sarah Brightman (1996) 등등. 1996년의 영화 "Evita"에서 주연을 맡은 Modonna의 노래도 유명하다. 그러나 내게는 Olivia의 그것이 최고의 "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"이다. 나의 10대를 설레게 했던 그 아름다운 목소리와 떨림을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 레코딩은 단연코 없다.


자.. Olivia의 라이브를 들어보고 마음을 정화시키도록 하자. 생각해보니 이 노래의 공연 영상은 처음 보는 것 같다. 이 영상은 1980년 6월 16일에 모국인 호주에서의 라이브 무대이다.
